what’s the deal with somatic yoga?

So, somatic yoga. Good grief. We’re focusing on internal physical perception now, are we? Forget about breaking a sweat or feeling the burn, let’s hunker down and concentrate on how your body’s feeling. Why? Is that supposed to be enlightening? Am I supposed to find nirvana by moving my pinky five times ever so slightly? If I wanted to feel tense about being tense, I’d watch cable news.

And don’t even get me started on this obsession with releasing tension and trauma. I’ve got enough trauma from trying to keep up with email. But sure, let’s pile on the assumptions about trauma living deep in my joints that’s just waiting for the right tiny movement to awaken it. It’s like yoga’s version of therapy, except it doesn’t promise solutions, just more questions. Forget diving into your past in therapy! Just wiggle around until you’re magically cured.

Why bother with perfect form when we can be imperfectly aware? Maybe next they’ll tell us yoga can help you fly if you focus hard enough. But if you find the idea appealing, be my guest. Explore what other bizarre yoga trends are out there. You’re in for a real adventure. Whatever.
