a standing workout that’s not another fad (maybe)

Okay, I was at the gym the other day, and this dude next to me was doing, what I’d call, standing crunches. Like literally ab exercises without ever touching the floor. Honestly, I was intrigued and a little amused. Are we really meant to twist and turn like some awkward yoga-tai-chi hybrid?

Anyway, apparently, it’s all about getting those abs engaged while standing. Fewer excuses for those who claim floor mats are the villain in their fitness story. So, I did my own detour (and probably looked like a drunk windmill). The verdict? Well, my abs did feel something, but mostly I felt like an extra in a bizarre high-energy ad. You know when you see those smiling overly enthusiastic people in commercials? Yeah, kind of like that.

But here’s the kicker – supposed benefits of standing ab workouts go beyond just skipping the mat. Some nice soul said it’s also about improved posture (which sounds legit) and core stability. And if you’re that person dodging floor routines like a plague, then standing abs are probably your next guilty pleasure. Just don’t expect miracles if you’re still bingeing on cake.

So, while I was laughing my abs off (literally), trying these maneuvers, others seemed dead serious. It’s like they were flashing their “I know this works” badge, while I stood there like “do my abs really care?”. Maybe those people will have the last laugh with shredded cores and perfect postures, while I still risk kicking something or someone during my floor workout struggles.

Not that I’m suggesting these are all gimmicks, but kind of curious if effective. Next time I see these exercises coming up next to those diet tips, I’d need more than just vibrant enthusiasm to be convinced. My eyes still hurt. I need coffee. Ugh.
